CHALLENGE #4:  Distraction, Dopamine, and Spiritual Apathy

By Marty Miller

You don’t become spiritually apathetic overnight.  You drift.  Not because you stopped believing—but because you got busy. Because you got tired. Because you got overstimulated.  Because your attention got divided into a thousand tiny pieces and handed away like loose change.

Most men don’t lose their faith through rebellion.  They lose it through distraction. And the scary part is: distraction doesn’t feel like danger. It feels like normal life.

The Metaphor: A Soul with a Leaky Cup

Picture your soul as a cup meant to hold living water.  But distraction is like a tiny crack in the bottom.  Not a big hole.  Not dramatic.  Just a steady leak.

So, you keep pouring things in like entertainment, sports, news, porn, scrolling, hustle, noise.  And you wonder why you’re always thirsty.

Jesus said: “Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.” (John 4:14)

But a cracked cup can’t hold what it was made to carry.  You don’t need more input. You need repair.  And you need the right water.

The Quiet Collapse Nobody Notices

Spiritual apathy isn’t atheism. It’s when you still show up… but you’re not really there.

Jesus confronts this exact condition: “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” (Matthew 15:8)

You can be near God with your calendar… and far from Him with your attention.  And over time, “far” starts feeling normal.

Dopamine: The Appetite That Gets Hijacked

Dopamine isn’t “pleasure.” It’s anticipation—the signal your brain uses to say:  “That. Right there. Go get more of that.”

God designed appetite to pull you toward life.  But modern life has learned to manufacture cheap appetite on demand.  One notification. One clip. One image. One laugh. One outrage spike.

And Scripture warns us about exactly this kind of training: “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful… I will not be dominated by anything.” (1 Corinthians 6:12)

Dominated doesn’t always look like addiction.  Sometimes it looks like “I can’t sit still.” Sometimes it looks like “I can’t pray without checking my phone.”  Sometimes it looks like “I’m bored with God but never bored with content.”

That’s not neutral. That’s domination.

Why Distraction Produces Spiritual Apathy

1) It numbs your hunger for God

Your heart can only crave what it has room to crave.

Jesus said: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6)

But hunger gets confused when you keep snacking.  If you flood your day with stimulation, Scripture starts to taste bland—not because it is, but because your appetite is damaged.

2) It trains you to avoid discomfort

Spiritual growth requires discomfort, repentance, silence, obedience, humility, confession The modern world offers an endless way out of that discomfort. But God often meets men in the hard places, not the entertained ones.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Stillness isn’t just calm.  Stillness is warfare in a world that profits off your restlessness.

3) It fractures attention—which fractures intimacy

God speaks, but distracted men can’t hear.  “

Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts…” (Hebrews 3:15).

Hardness isn’t only rebellion.  Hardness is also prolonged ignoring.  When a man repeatedly chooses noise over voice, the heart slowly calluses.

THE FILTERED FAMILY: Raising Mentally and Spiritually Focused Kids in a Digitally Distracted World

A Practical Guide for Christian Fathers of Teenagers

If you're a dad who wants to make your home a place where quiet and stillness are experienced by all you are facing an uphill battle. Especially if you have teenagers in the home. This practical guide is designed to help you raise mentally and spiritually focused kids in a digitally distracted world.

The goal isn’t to raise kids who avoid the world — it’s to raise kids who can engage the world without being owned by it.  We’re not anti-technology, anti-sports, or anti-fun.  We’re pro-formation, not deformation.  Teenagers don’t need more rules — they need wise guides who help them learn how to live.
